Mt Pleasant dismiss Arnett to secure JPL top spot
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Mt Pleasant FA have clinched top spot in the Jamaica Premier League after beating third place Arnett Gardens 2-0 in their third round game played at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex on Thursday.
It was a fifth straight win for Mt Pleasant FA who motored on to an unassailable 84 points while Arnett Gardens, who extended their winless run to five games, are five points behind second place Montego Bay United with three games left.
Raheem Edwards scored his 12th goal of the season, joining Shaquille Bradford as the team leader, giving Mt Pleasant FA the lead in the fifth minute. Jahshaun Anglin then scored in time added at the end of the first half to double Mt Pleasant’s advantage, as Arnett Gardens failed to score in a game for the sixth time this season.
It was Mt Pleasant FA’s second straight win over Arnett Gardens this season, both 2-0 margins.
In the first game of the double header, defending champions Cavalier SC moved to within a point of confirming their place in the play-offs after beating Racing United 3-0, eliminating the latter from play-off contention.
Shaquille Stein scored his 12th goal of the season to give Cavalier the lead in the 25th minute before Dwayne Allen scored his first goal of the season two minutes into time added at the end of the first half. Jalmaro Calvin scored his 19th goal of the season in the 83rd minute to confirm all three points for Cavalier.
