Lampart smashes national Under-20 shot put record at Carifta Games

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica’s Marla Kay Lampart broke her own national Under-20 record and the Carifta Games record after she threw a sensational 17.44m to win the gold medal on Sunday at the 52nd staging of the regional championships at the Hasely Crawford stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

Lampart’s throw was the second best ever at the Central American and Caribbean level and ranks her second in the world in the Under-20 girls’ section, exceeding her Jamaican record of 15.98m set in January at GC Foster College in Angels, St Catherine.

It also beat the previous Carifta record of 15.75m set in 2002 by Claudia Vileneuve of Martinique.

She had just four throws and passed her final two efforts after apparently hurting her throwing arm.

Annae Mackey threw a Bahamian Under-20 record of 17.14m to take second place while last year’s winner, Jamaica’s Kimeka Smith, took the bronze medal with 14.95m.
