Doctor dies in Easter Monday crash; 3 hospitalised in stable condition
ST MARY, Jamaica — An early morning motor vehicle crash in Castleton, St Mary on Easter Monday has left a doctor dead and three others hospitalised in stable condition.
Police reports indicate that four doctors, three of whom are from Nigeria, were travelling from Kingston to St Mary when the driver, a female attached to the Annotto Bay Hospital, lost control of the vehicle on reaching a section of the Castleton main road, causing it to go over a precipice.
All passengers sustained injuries and were taken to the Annotto Bay Hospital, where one succumbed to his injuries. The other passengers remain in stable condition.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been disclosed.
Senior Medical Officer for the Annotto Bay Hospital, Dr Glenton Strachan, told Observer Online that the Annotto Bay Hospital family is in shock and mourning the loss of their colleague.
“Grief counselling has started and will continue over the week to guide us through this difficult time,” Dr Strachan said.
The doctors who are in stable conditions are said to have been attached to the Obstetrics, General Surgery and Internal Medicine Departments for the past three to six months. Meanwhile, the doctor who succumbed to his injuries was attached to the Internal Medicine Department since March of this year.
