Four detained in suspected human trafficking in Guyana
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) — Police have detained four individuals and seized two trucks after they intercepted three underage girls at a checkpoint in Kurupukari, an indigenous settlement on the Essequibo River in the Upper Demerara-Berbice region of Guyana late Sunday.
A statement issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs did not divulge the identities or the nationalities of those detained or of the underage girls, but said the investigation was ongoing.
It said that the police at the Kurupukari checkpoint intercepted “three underage girls in what is suspected to be a case of human trafficking”.
“Two trucks were detained and four individuals, including two drivers and two porters, have been taken into custody as investigations continue,” it added.
