KC’s Despiro Wray wins shot put at Penn Relays
Kingston College’s Despiro Wray added another title to his list of achievements this season after winning the shot put on Thursday’s opening day of the 129th Penn Relays Carnival at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.
Wray, who had won the event in Class 1 at Jamaica’s boys and and girls’ high school athletic championships last month and then in the under-20 category at last weekend’s Carifta championships in Trinidad, threw 20.87m – the 10th best throw ever at Penn’s – to win in Philadelphia on Thursday.
He led a Jamaican 1-2-3 finish with Munro College’s Devonte Edwards second with 19.78m and Cornwall College’s Mar-Lando Farquharson third with 19.67m. It was the same order of finish in the Class 1 finals at ‘Champs’ last month.
Edwards was fourth last year with 18.52m and Farquharson had finished 11th with 16.99m behind winner, Jamaica College’s Shaiquan Dunn.
Meanwhile, Jamaica College’s Joseph Salmon took second in the discus throw with 61.64m, while Calabar High’s Kamari Kennedy was fifth with 59.32m. Favourite Ashton Hearn of Christian Brothers High in Tennessee won with 64.30m.
St Catherine High’s Rajay Hemmings was eighth with 54.92m and Kingston College’s Daijon Budhai was 11th with 52.81m.
