Immortals J’ouvert 2025: Freedom, fire and fun in the streets of Kingston
There’s nothing quite like j’ouvert in Kingston — and this year, GenXS Immortals J’ouvert felt like pure magic.
Before the sun even thought about rising, we gathered at the Liguanea Club, where the vibes were already sky-high. Smirnoff had bars set up to keep the drinks flowing, CPJ was serving up hot dogs and pizza, and of course, the line for KFC stretched halfway across the car park — because no carnival experience is complete without it! Water trucks sprayed the crowd, soaking everyone in cool relief and cranking up the energy even more.
Once we left the club, the sea of revellers poured onto Oxford Road, painted in gorgeous shades of light pink and cobalt blue — the colours we were given at the start. The contrast against the grey dawn was breathtaking, and it didn’t take long before the pint-throwing started, with splashes of paint and powder filling the air as laughter and music echoed down the street.

Scantily clad women and men danced wildly to the biggest soca hits of 2025, flags waving high and hips rolling to the rhythm. As we turned onto Belmont Road, the excitement hit a whole new level when none other than Walshy Fire from the renowned group Major Lazer took over the decks. His set was pure energy — a brilliant blend of dancehall, soca, and Afrobeat that had the entire crowd jumping, waving, and singing at the top of their lungs.
One reveller captured the feeling best, shouting over the music: “There’s no place in the world like Kingston at sunrise during J’ouvert — it’s pure magic, pure freedom!”
And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, out came the towering stilt walkers, fire breathers lighting up the morning sky, and fire dancers twirling and moving in hypnotic rhythm. As the sun finally rose around 6:30 am, casting a golden glow over the city, it felt like time itself had stopped to celebrate with us.

After hours of dancing and revelry, the Liguanea Club welcomed everyone back with a well-earned breakfast. Whether you were craving a light continental spread or tucking into hearty Jamaican favourites like ackee and saltfish or fried dumplings, it was the perfect way to recharge after the wild joy of the morning.
J’ouvert, meaning “daybreak” or “opening of the day” in French, has deep roots in Caribbean history. Born from the Afro-French Creole traditions of Trinidad and Tobago, it evolved into a powerful symbol of freedom after emancipation in 1834. Today, J’ouvert is messy, colourful, loud, and utterly beautiful — a living, breathing celebration of resilience, freedom, and the Caribbean spirit.
More than just a party, J’ouvert is a feeling — a connection to our ancestors, to each other, and to the pure joy of being alive. This year, Kingston’s streets brought together Caribbean nationals, members of the diaspora, Europeans, and people from across the world. For a few glorious hours, we weren’t strangers — we were one massive family.
