WATCH: Carnival revelers continue to deface public and private properties—KSAMC
KINGSTON, Jamaica—Chief Executive Officer of the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC), Robert Hill, says several residents have made complaints to the KSAMC regarding their residences being defaced with paint by revellers amid carnival activities.
“I have been getting calls from residents. I would like to say that there were several preplanning meetings that we would have had. The promoters, organisers, and band leaders indicated and committed that they would have had wash-down facilities following the revelling activities. What has happened is that it is either halfway done or not properly done, and residents have been calling both the Mayor and myself and the team that is out from the KSAMC, expressing their displeasure and concern about the paint splashing on the walls and on the roads,” said Hill.
“These are residences that people live in, so I can understand the heightened sensitivity around it and the action that is required to resolve this issue,” Hill added.
The CEO said sidewalks, street signs and road markings were also impacted by paint.
A team from the KSAMC, including Mayor Andrew Swaby and representatives of the National Solid Waste Management Authority, were deployed on Saturday to observe cleanup activities by the event promoter.
“We have indicated to all the promoters that we would be on the road observing what is being done, making sure that what they have agreed to, they keep their promise to, so a team of KSAMC personnel and, to my understanding, some from the National Solid Waste Management Authority were deployed to all the areas, and we have been observing. We have seen where they have been collecting the garbage. Where we have a difficulty is the painting,” said Swaby.
