Immediate action needed
Dear Editor,
I am writing to highlight the urgent need for Jamaica and Caricom to act swiftly regarding the grave threat posed by offshore oil operations in Guyana.
Environmental impact assessments have shown that a major oil spill would devastate not just Guyana, but also Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, and many other Caribbean nations. The risk is real and catastrophic.
Given the heavy traffic of oil tankers and cruise ships, and the possibility of rig disasters, the chance of a spill is ever-present. If disaster strikes, it would cripple our tourism industry, poison our environment, endanger public health, and severely damage our economies and societies.
We urge the Government of Jamaica and Caricom to immediately intervene and insist that the Guyanese authorities uphold the necessary safeguards. The future of the Caribbean Sea and our livelihoods depends on it.
