JA Blends and Spices bottles the essence of Jamaican flavours

In the heart of Old Harbour, St Catherine, a quiet revolution in flavour is taking place as JA Blends & Spices Limited crafts more than just seasonings but also bottles the soul of Jamaica’s rich culinary heritage for kitchens around the world.

What began as a passion project in 2022 quickly evolved into a full-fledged business as creative entrepreneur and graphic designer Camille Henry transformed her vision into a vibrant culinary movement, fuelled by a desire to see more locally made, healthy, and authentic Jamaican products on supermarket shelves.

Drawing from her background in branding, Henry created a visually striking and culturally resonant product line through which every label and package tells a story — capturing the colour, rhythm, and identity of Jamaica.

“JA Blends & Spices is a woman-led, Jamaican-owned speciality food company that produces premium seasoning blends and spices inspired by the island’s rich culinary traditions. Our mission is to deliver authentic, natural Jamaican flavours to kitchens locally and internationally while proudly promoting the island’s food heritage,” Henry told the Jamaica Observer.

Launched shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic, the business grew out of a time when many people turned to cooking and home-based ventures.

“I jumped on the opportunity to blend natural, authentic Jamaican spices and herbs and captured the real flavours of Jamaica in a bottle,” Henry further stated, while noting that as a mother she was also motivated to create a legacy of empowerment and excellence for her child and others that she mentors.

The company, in offering a curated line of clean-label, MSG-free products, now has among its creations a signature Jamaican jerk seasoning [in both mild and hot], scotch bonnet pepper powder, scotch bonnet garlic powder with parsley, and also a rich Jamaican curry powder. These bold, natural seasonings are packaged in attractive, export-ready containers, making them popular not only in homes but also in restaurants, hotels, and gourmet food stores.

“Our scotch bonnet pepper powder and jerk seasoning continue to be our most popular products, beloved by customers for their rich, bold, and genuine flavours,” Henry noted.

Like many start-ups, JA Blends has faced early challenges — from disruptions in sourcing raw materials due to global supply chain issues, to the complexities of scaling while preserving artisanal quality, and the ongoing battle for brand visibility in a competitive market. Yet, with the support of a growing team of five, along with part-time and contract professionals, the company, in the last three years, has remained focused and resilient.

Encouraged by increasing demand and market traction, the business has also grown beyond local retailers to have established partnerships with major hotels and restaurants. These positive developments standing as a clear sign of the company’s expanding footprint have seen it, between 2023 and 2024, recording a 30 per cent increase in revenues, one of its stand-out achievements to date.

Other key milestones include its exhibitions at national trade shows such as Christmas in July and Expo Jamaica as well as its ability to secure shelf space in the JBDC Things Jamaican stores at Norman Manley International Airport and Devon House. Additionally, the company got the chance to break into export markets.

“The first time experiencing the excitement of exporting our products, receiving our first cheque from a retailer, and seeing our products on store shelves are some of the other unforgettable moments in our journey,” Henry said.

With no plans to slow down anytime soon, JA Blends, now on an aggressive growth path, is setting its sights on the next three to five years, with some of the main plans afoot, including an expansion of its product line, which is to see the addition of innovative blends inspired by traditional Jamaican cuisine. This, as the company broadens its distribution across the Caribbean and Diaspora communities while investing in brand storytelling and digital outreach.

More importantly, the company said it also remains committed to leveraging its growth to create opportunities for others.

“We want to create mentorship and empowerment opportunities for women and young entrepreneurs, using our business growth as a platform for positive impact,” Henry said.

“We’re not just building a business, we’re building a movement rooted in culture, quality, and community. With the planned introduction of healthy teas and expansion into international markets, the company is well-positioned for further growth and market penetration,” she added.
