KINGSTON, Jamaica — Edwin Allen High School recently marked Read Across Jamaica Day with a range of activities designed to promote literacy among its students.

The day began with a general assembly featuring a devotional exercise and a series of engaging reading sessions.

The principal added a festive touch by dressing as Max the Bunny, the official Read Across Jamaica mascot, delighting students and creating a joyful atmosphere.

Student leaders, known as Read Across Jamaica Day ambassadors, visited classrooms to share stories and inspire their peers. Guest readers from the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) also participated, emphasising the importance of reading in all career paths.

Other highlights included interactive reading sessions, book giveaways and student performances celebrating Jamaican literature and culture.

Senior teacher and Head of the Literacy Department, Marlene Russell-Wright, emphasised the goal of the initiative, explaining that it aims to develop confident, critical thinkers prepared to navigate a rapidly changing world through the power of words.

The event forms part of the school’s broader efforts to improve literacy, supporting its ‘five in five’ policy, which encourages students to graduate with at least five subjects, including English and Mathematics.
