Michelin Recommends: Los Bocheros, Mendoza
There’s a moment, one all wine travellers seek, when a glass, a view, and a bite converge into something sublime. In the heart of Agrelo, Mendoza’s storied wine country, that moment now has a name: Los Bocheros, the restaurant nestled within La Madrid Estate Winery. The Michelin Guide Argentina 2025,
in announcing Los Bocheros as one of six new establishments it recommends, said, “This restaurant is known for its honest and generous cuisine, and a continual desire to revive the culinary traditions of Mendoza.” The recognition from Michelin, which is not just about prestige but also validation, places this warm, soulful restaurant among Argentina’s culinary elite.
Tucked away on the La Madrid Estate in Mendoza’s Agrelo district, the restaurant takes its name from a cherished local pastime, bochas (or bocce ball), played between vineyard workers under the cooling shade of olive trees. That spirit of togetherness, labour, and simple pleasure infuses every element of Los Bocheros, from the open-flame cooking style to the unpretentious, ingredient-led plates designed to pair seamlessly with the wines of La Madrid. Here, the Andes don’t just serve as a backdrop but rather silent guardians of the vineyard, looming dramatically behind rows of Cabernet Franc and Bonarda, soaking the region in the kind of majesty that makes you pause, breathe deeper, and taste slower.
Los Bocheros doesn’t clamour for attention. Instead, it invites you to stay awhile, to linger over a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon that speaks of stones and sunlight, and to savour flame-grilled fare that feels both homespun and artful. Perched in one of Mendoza’s most fertile microregions, Los Bocheros is a place where earth, vine, and cuisine unite. With a seasonal menu curated to celebrate local terroir, and wines that showcase the soul of Agrelo, like bold Cabernet Sauvignon, elegant Bonarda, and a floral Cabernet Franc Rosé, the experience isn’t just a meal; it’s a full-bodied memory.
To understand why Los Bocheros matters, one must first understand that La Madrid Estate Winery, founded by Guillermo García La Madrid, is not just a business but also a family tribute and a resurrection of Argentine heritage, rooted in the Agrelo district of Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza. The terroir here is no ordinary terroir, boasting high elevation up to 980 metres above sea level, wide thermal amplitude, and rocky alluvial soils that make it one of the finest regions in Argentina for red varietals. Since 2004, La Madrid has transformed its 248 acres spread across four estates, La Suiza, Matilde, Lamadrid, and Las Compuertas, into a viticultural canvas, each plot painted with micro-terroir precision. What distinguishes La Madrid is its deep commitment to single-vineyard, 100 per cent varietal expressions that allow each wine to tell a story, not just of the grape, but of its origins on the vine.
The wine list at Los Bocheros is less of a suggestion and more of script, naturally taking centre stage, as guests are invited to pair seasonal dishes with signature bottlings. Every dish is written around what’s in the bottle, and each pairing is as deliberate as it is delightful. To kick-start our Michelin in Argentina 2025 series, Thursday Food introduces four outstanding labels from La Madrid Estate Wines:
Zunzun Rosado de Cabernet Franc is a 100 per cent varietal made from grapes grown at Finca Lamadrid in Agrelo, Luján de Cuyo. This blush wine has a bright pale pink colour while expressing fruit such as peach, cherry, and pear as well as fresh citric notes on the nose. In the mouth, a bouquet of pink and white flowers accompanies light spices such as cardamom, resulting in wine that is elegant as well as easy to drink with a balanced acidity that adds freshness to light, soft tannins.
La Madrid Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon, a singular varietal produced from grapes grown at Finca La Suiza is ruby red in colour with violet tones. It has an attractive style, on the nose, with an earthy and spicy glow, perceived through ripe blackberries and plums. On the palate, it has a very smooth, polished, and fresh texture with impressive balance and freshness.
La Madrid Reserva Cabernet Franc comprises 100 per cent Cabernet Franc grapes that were harvested at Finca La Suiza from vines growing at 1,000 above sea level, first planted in 2006. This wine offers dark, spicy, and earthy aromas with ripe plums and blackberries on the nose. On the palate, it has a grainy tannin edge that truly lingers in the fresh, detailed, and long finish.
La Madrid Bonarda, made from 100 per cent varietal grapes at Finca Lamadrid, is located 1,000 metres above sea level in Agrelo. Grown on sandy, clay-loam soils, this wine offers full fruit on the nose with hints of vanilla and mint. On the palate, it is intense, with notes of plum, ripe fruit, and chocolate.
The evolution of the country’s viticulture encourages places like La Madrid Estate and Los Bocheros to offer not just an escape but a cultural dialogue between palate and place, slow travel at its most delicious: immersive, sensory, and meaningful. With the Michelin Guide’s official seal, Los Bocheros is poised to become a must-visit destination for gourmands and oenophiles alike so whether you’re wandering the winery’s bougainvillea-lined paths, sipping rosé under a eucalyptus, or dining beside a blazing parrilla as the sun dips behind the Andes, an experience that is profoundly Argentine, deeply rooted, and entirely unforgettable awaits you.
