Earlier this week, singer Gramps Morgan received a platinum plaque, which commemorated sales of more than one million units of the song Let’s Do it Again, recorded by Hawaiian reggae artiste J Boog.

Let’s Do it Again was produced by Jamaican producer Donovan “Don Corleon” Bennett and recorded at Bennett’s Vendetta studio in Kingston in 2011. The song was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America in February last year. It also received a silver certification (200,000 units) from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).

Morgan is responsible for introducing J Boog to Don Corleon and he also encouraged the prolific producer to record him on one of his beats. Morgan also produced multiple tracks on J Boog’s Backyard Boogie album, some of which were recorded at the Digital B studio.

In an interview with the Jamaica Observer, an emotional Morgan spoke about how he met J Boog and brought him to Jamaica.

“The feeling is incredible and humbling at the same time. I will never forget the moment that I brought J Boog to Don Corleon. I met him through a mutual friend when I was in Hawaii, a guy named Fiji, who is also an incredible singer. He introduced me to two guys who owned the label Washhouse Music Group, Jonas Teel and Brian Foster that’s where the whole thing started before I took J Boog on tour with me and later to Jamaica,” Morgan recalled.

Morgan said he was able to convince Don Corleon to record J Boog because he trusted Morgan’s judgement.

“Don Corleon was very busy at the time recording major hit rhythms and he had his own roster of artistes on his label, but he trusted my ear based on the work that we have done together with Morgan Heritage and took the gamble and it paid off well,” Morgan disclosed.

Morgan was featured on J Boog’s Grammy-nominated album Washhouse Ting on a track titled Raggamuffin featuring Buju Banton and also has credits as a composer and producer on the project, while his brother Peetah did background vocals and also engineered some of the tracks.

“The role that I played in the song Let’s Do it Again was just the introduction of J Boog to Don Corleon. I left them in the studio working on the song, while I went to Big Yard to lay down some tracks for his album,” said Morgan.

He added, “I have produced several songs with him including Raggamuffin, which was recorded while we were on Buju Banton’s Rasta Got Soul tour, but I was the main producer for J Boog’s Backyard Boogie album. I was tasked by the label to produce the album”.

J Boog also received a Best Reggae Album Grammy nomination in 2017 for his EP titled Rose Petals, and for Washhouse Ting in 2018. He consistently outsells tours across the US and his albums outsells those by his Jamaican counterparts.
