Girvano ready to rumble in Yvonne Mattis Cup
Girvano, a talented three-year-old American-bred bay colt, is poised to shine in this afternoon’s $1.2-million Yvonne Mattis Cup, an Overnight Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward going nine furlongs (1,800m).
Despite stepping up in grade, Girvano’s impressive form and class make him a strong contender for the win. After three consecutive victories, he has built momentum, and his recent workouts suggest he’s well-prepared to take on the best horses in the field.
While two of his wins were decided in the stewards’ room due to interference from rivals Nephew and Unruly Mo, Girvano’s potential is undeniable. Despite being unfairly treated in those races, he’s demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure. With a proven track record and suitability to longer distances, Girvano’s chances of success in the Yvonne Mattis Cup are looking bright.
Girvano’s connections are hoping that he can showcase his true worth and claim victory in the feature race. With a brilliant gallop on May 4, where he clocked an impressive 1:26.4 for seven furlongs, he’s sent a strong message to rivals.
The Yvonne Mattis Cup is positioned as the ninth and final event on the day with a post time of 5:30 pm. First race is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
Rainsville and Rhythm Buzz are expected to be Girvano’s only threat here. Rainsville has been quiet lately as he is winless in four starts this season. However, he steps down in class for this race and this could be the opportunity he needs to claim victory. He worked 1:15.2 for six furlongs (1,200m) on Monday, May 5.
After a strong second-place finish over one mile on April 26, Rhythm Buzz seems to be comfortable over that distance. He could very well land the victory here on a similar effort.
Captain Sparrow looks likely a dark horse in this race. After a disappointing fourth place behind Immeasurable Joy on May 3 over one mile, Captain Sparrow steps up in distance to compete here. It will be very difficult to see him win the race but given his pedigree, he might surprise many with a strong performance.
