MoBay draw first blood vs Tivoli in JPL play-off
Montego Bay United defeated Tivoli Gardens 2-1 in a historic Wray & Nephew Premier League first-leg quarter-final play-off game that was completed at two different venues.
The match started on Thursday at Sabina Park but was halted by an electrical lighting failure after 35 minutes.
Montego Bay United had to arrange accommodations at the eleventh hour on Thursday to stay over in Kingston.
But the Paul “Tegat” Davis-coached team showed no ill-effect and was the deserved winner thanks to goals by Owayne Gordon and Jourdaine Fletcher.
The game resumed on Friday at the Stadium East field at 6:00 pm and at 6:18 pm, the first half finally came to an end with the score level at 0-0.
The second half was different as Gordon livened things up in the 56th minute with a beautiful free kick that hit the crossbar on its way in with goalkeeper Nicholas Clarke all over the place.
Immediately, a scuffle ensued near the Tivoli Gardens bench. Both Demario Phillips and Lucas Lima were yellow-carded in the aftermath.
Phillips was in action once again and his goalbound shot was cleared off he line by Alton Lewis with goalkeeper Clarke once again in no-man’s land.
But in the 73rd minute, Roshawn Oldfield pulled Tivoli Gardens level against the run of play, scoring with a low left-footed shot that sailed past goalkeeper Davonnie Burton.
The intensity of the game went up a notch as both teams hunted the advantage. And it came from Montego Bay’s Fletcher who slotted home in the 87th minute.
It was a fortunate goal for Fletcher as, during a melee inside the box, a miskick by Shaneil Thomas found him at the back post and he made no mistake.
Both teams are to meet again in the return leg at Sabina Park on Monday with a spot in the semi-finals still up for grabs.
This was the third time Montego Bay United defeated Tivoli Gardens this season out of four meetings, but Monday’s game will be the most important of them all.
