MoBay gain advantage over Tivoli; Cavalier and Portmore end all square in JPL playoffs
Montego Bay United clipped Tivoli Gardens 2-1 while Portmore United and Cavalier battled to a 1-1 draw in their Wray and Nephew Jamaica Premier League first leg quarter-final games at Stadium East.
In a game that started on Thursday at Sabina Park and was postponed after 35 minutes because of an electrical failure, historically finishing at Stadium East on Friday, Montego Bay gained a one-goal advantage heading into Monday’s second leg.
Veteran strikers Owayne Gordon (56th) and Jourdaine Fletcher (86th) put the St James unit in the driver’s seat and one foot into the semifinals. It was their third win over Tivoli Gardens in four meetings but the tie is far from over.
Roshawn Oldfield, with a splendid strike in the 73rd minute, had pulled Tivoli Gardens level and they would have left the game feeling they should have gotten a better result.
In the feature encounter, Caribbean champions Cavalier and Portmore played to a 1-1 draw with everything to play for come Monday.
Former Cavalier player Ronaldo Robinson gave Portmore a 26th-minute lead with a powerfully struck left footer from 20 metres that nestled into the pigeonhole.
But a glancing header from Jerome McLeary in the 35th minute from a corner kick pulled Cavalier level.
Cavalier could have stolen it close to the end but Dwayne “Busy” Campbell fired over the bar of an empty goal from close range in the 89th minute.
It was an evenly matched encounter and on Monday, it could go either way.
Portmore turned in one of their better displays all season and will have to repeat that performance if they are going to hold off a Cavalier team that still has a notch or two to step up.
