Corinaldi triumphant in Cornwall Scotiabank U-11 football
MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica — Corinaldi Avenue Primary won the County of Cornwall section of the Scotiabank Under-11 mixed five-a-side kids’ football competition after beating John Rollins Success Primary 7-2 in the final at WesPow Park in St James on Sunday.
Last weekend’s two-day event was the second of three preliminary stagings.
Corinaldi Avenue joined Greater Portmore Primary, the Surrey winners, in the all-island final phase. The Middlesex section is to be held this weekend in Kingston.
The winners of all three sections plus the team which tops the Fair Play section will advance to the all-island finals to be contested in Kingston.
Corinaldi Avenue and John Rollins Primary qualified for the Cornwall final after close semi-final wins over Irwin Primary and Fairfield International Academy, respectively.
Corinaldi Avenue edged Irwin Primary 3-2, while John Rollins Success, despite playing most of the second half with just four players held off Fairfield International 4-3.
Fifteen teams from the parishes of St James and Trelawny started the competition on Saturday with eight rounds of games before the top eight qualified for the second day. The other teams in the top eight were Chetwood, Catherine Hall, Granville of St James and Hosanna Prep.
In the quarter-finals on Sunday morning, John Rollins Success defeated Chetwood 5-1; Fairfield International beat Catherine Hall 4-1; Corinaldi Avenue outplayed Granville 4-1; and Irwin were 9-0 winners over Hosanna.
