Plié Academy of the Arts’ Youth Gala set for Sunday
More than 70 performers, whose ages range between 3-18 years old, will take the stage at this Sunday’s Plié Academy of the Arts annual Youth Gala.
Under the theme ‘The Power of the Dream’, the production is set to take place at the Little Theatre.
Marisa Benain, a member of the creative team and co-founder of Plié Academy of the Arts told the Jamaica Observer on Wednesday that the production will showcase quality performances.
“Patrons can expect a good quality, family-oriented show with excellent singing, dancing, and acting. The Power of the Dream is about inspiring the performers and the audience. It encourages everyone to dream and to dream big,” said Benain.
The other members of the creative team include Gregory Simms, Michael Holgate, Roger Hinds, Gregory Simms, and Jevaughn Gordon, while the choreographers behind the production are Lauryn Rickman, Steve Cornwall, Kevin Moore, Lianne Williams, Joshua Craigie, and Kareen McLean.
According to Benain, there has been considerable growth in the performance quality compared to last year’s gala presentation.
“There is an obvious growth in the performance quality, especially from the ones who performed last year. You see more excitement in their eyes this year,” Benain shared.
Asked about the challenges of putting on the production, she said, “Challenge is what it requires to get a cast at this age to an acceptable performance standard and then having them work in harmony in time for the show. We have many high points this year, but my heart smiles the most seeing the full cast on stage moving in unison.”
Benain added, “What is amazing about the production is that there is something for everyone on the show. Take the family out for an exciting evening showcasing the future of the performing arts.”
The Plié Academy of the Arts was formed five years ago.
Benain shared that the vision behind the academy was the need to create an opportunity to facilitate training and performance experience for young performers and enthusiasts.
“My objective for the Plié Academy was inspired by my own artistic training in Cathi Levy’s Little People and Teen Players Club. We had an outlet to sing, dance, and act and appreciate theatre, and this is my vision for any student who comes to the Plie Academy. I do believe it’s a journey and we are definitely heading in the right direction,” said Benain.
