Apprentices shine in jockey rankings
The 2025 racing season has seen a significant development with the emergence of three talented apprentice jockeys — Richie Shakes, Tajay Suckoo, and Demar Williams. Despite starting their professional journey in mid-December 2024, these young riders have quickly made their presence felt, cracking the 2025 top 10 rankings.
Richie Shakes leads the charge among the apprentices, sitting in fourth place in the standings with 18 victories. His consistent performances and skill in the saddle have made him a top contender. Tajay Suckoo follows closely, ranking fifth in the standings with 15 wins, while Demar Williams rounds out the top 10 with 10 victories.
What’s particularly noteworthy about Shakes and Suckoo is their shared background from Lionel Town, Clarendon, and their long-standing friendship. Their rise in the sport adds an exciting layer to their story.
While champion jockey Raddesh Roman holds a commanding lead of 11 wins on 35 winners, followed by Shane Ellis (24 wins) and Robert Halledeen (21 wins), the apprentices’ impressive performances have set the stage for a thrilling competition. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on these young jockeys to see if they can maintain their momentum and challenge the established riders.
The emergence of these talented apprentices not only injects fresh talent into the sport but also promises an exciting future for Jamaican racing. With months of racing still ahead, the battle for supremacy among jockeys is far from over.
