Divine Force defies odds in Yvonne Mattis Cup upset
Divine Force pulled off a stunning upset in the $1.25-million Yvonne Mattis Cup on Saturday, May 10, 2025, defying 19-1 odds to dominate the field in the Overnight Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward over 9 furlongs (1,800m).
The five-year-old American-bred bay horse, trained by Philip Feanny and ridden by Delroy Behaire, showcased his speed and endurance, crossing the finish line three lengths ahead of Girvano, ridden by Raddesh Roman, and Sistren Treasure piloted by Paul Francis. The winning time of 1:52.3 (24.3 x 47.2 x 1:12.0 x 1:38.4) was impressive.
According to Feanny, favourable racing conditions played a significant role in Divine Force’s victory. The trainer praised
Beharie’s skills and strategy.
“He [Delroy Beharie] deserved it [the win]. The way the race was set up, I thought Divine Force would have a great chance,” Feanny said in a post-race interview.
Feanny explained that the lack of speed in the race allowed Beharie to execute a winning strategy.
“There wasn’t any speed in the race, and so we decided to go in front, and with his one pace, hopefully he would hold on. He keeps one pace and that’s a good one pace,” Feanny said.
As the field exited the intersection at the seven-furlong pole (1,400m), Divine Force held a comfortable lead ahead of
Sistren Treasure and Sonny T and Chippy, ridden by Shane Richardson. Maintaining a smooth gallop, Divine Force continued to assert his dominance down the backstretch. Approaching the half-mile turn (800m), Divine Force’s jockey asked for more, and the bay horse responded by upping the tempo.
Entering the straight, Beharie adopted a hands-and-heels approach, motionless in the saddle. With just a couple of taps,
Divine Force powered home effortlessly, crossing the finishing line with ease. The upset victory marked a notable achievement for Divine Force, his trainer, and his jockey, proving that sometimes the underdog can shine brightest.
Beharie expressed gratitude for the win.
“Every time I go there I always want to win, and so I have to give God thanks for everything. Thanks also to the owner and the trainer for the belief in me to give me the ride. I hope one more win come behind this one,” Beharie said.
Beharie credited his understanding of Divine Force’s abilities for the victory.
“The instructions were to get a good break, put him in the lead, rate him well, and who comes just come. I had a good lead going down and so I don’t rush him, I just leave him, until I reached the furlong pole I ask him to go. I know this horse very well. I know he is a one-paced horse,” Beharie explained.
