Double-header delight: Aston Villa, Chelsea host big matches today in EPL action

Four of the English Premier League teams will be in action later today in two mouth-watering encounters as Aston Villa hosts Tottenham, with Chelsea and Manchester United squaring off in another important clash, especially for Chelsea as they seek a top four spot.

Event # 1 – EPL – Aston Villa vs Tottenham – 1:30 PM

Aston Villa will welcome Tottenham to Villa Park later today as they continue their dream of repeating this season’s Champions League success, with qualification for next season’s competition within their grasp. Aston Villa head into this contest off the back of a vital 1-0 win over Bournemouth last weekend, which means victory over Tottenham would push them into the top five, albeit temporarily, as they seek to play Champions League football for the second season in a row, whereas this game means little to Tottenham as they prepare to face Manchester United in this season’s Europa League final next week. With that said, Aston Villa will be confident of victory over a distracted Tottenham side, especially since they have been excellent at home so far this season, winning eight of their last ten home matches and have lost just one game at home.

Tottenham’s League form has been abysmal, as they are set to have their worst league finish in the Premier League history. Indeed, they have lost four of their last five matches, with the Europa League being their main priority as it represents their only hope silverware this season. They will likely be resting most of their star players for next week’s final against Manchester United and, despite reaching the Europa League final, Tottenham have been shockingly poor this season having won just one of their last 10 Premier League matches. Moreover, Tottenham have lost 19 league games so far this season, more than any other top-half side, but they have scored in six-straight league games and have failed to score in just one of their last nine matches.

Key Stats

• Aston Villa – Aston Villa have won seven straight home matches and are aiming to making it eight straight as they bid for a top five finish.

• Tottenham – Tottenham have lost four of their last five Premier League matches and have won just two of their last 12 Premier League matches.

• Both sides – Aston Villa are undefeated in their last 17 home matches and have scored in 16 of those 17 matches, while Tottenham have the third worst away record in the league, winning just five of their 18 matches played so far.

The betting tip: Aston Villa win.

Event # EPL – Chelsea vs Manchester United – 2:15 PM

Chelsea will be looking to keep their hopes of Champions League football qualification alive when they host a Manchester United side who will be concentrating on their Europa League final against Tottenham next week. After beating the Premier League champions, Liverpool, 3-1 a week ago, Chelsea then sealed their place in the Conference League final with a 1-0 win over Swedish side Djurgarden a few days later, but they couldn’t maintain that winning run as they were defeated 2-0 by fellow Champions League hopefuls, Newcastle, while also failing to score for the first time in their last nine matches. Chelsea, who won the Champions League as recently as 2021, had gone on a five-game winning run in all competitions before losing to Newcastle last weekend, their first in the league since March 16. That loss has left them hanging onto their Champions League spot by a thread, as they sit fifth in the standings, level on points with sixth placed Aston Villa, who will also be in action today.

Meanwhile, the winless run of Premier League strugglers Manchester United continued to an astonishing seven matches last Sunday when they were ambushed and beaten 2-0 at home by another struggling side in the form of West Ham, who, incidentally, leapfrogged them in the standing with the win. Indeed, Manchester United are 16th in the league table and are heading towards their worst-ever Premier League campaign. However, their poor form could be masked by success in the Europa League, where they will face another struggling Premier League team, Tottenham, next week. Manchester United have been so poor away from home this season that their last win away from Old Trafford was on March 16, and they have secured just one point from their last four away matches. Amazingly, with league games against Champions League aspirants Chelsea and Aston Villa scheduled for either side of the Europa League final, there is a distinct possibility that Manchester United might not achieve the 40-point mark, an achievement synonymous with sides fighting for their lives to avoid relegation in the Premier League.

Key Stats

• Chelsea – Chelsea have won three consecutive home matches and have won five of their last six matches.

• Man United – Manchester United are winless in their last seven matches, losing five during this run.

• Both sides – Chelsea have kept only two clean sheets in their last eight matches, while Man United have conceded in eight of their last nine matches.

The betting tip: Chelsea win & both teams to score.
