Trainer sees bright future for Another One in sprinting
Trainer Anthony “Baba” Nunes expressed relief and optimism after his charge Another One’s impressive win in the $1.1-million Mother’s Day Special race at Caymanas Park on Saturday, May 10, 2025.
The Restricted Allowance II contest for native-bred three-year-olds (non-winners of two) over 5 furlongs (1,000m) straight was tailor-made for Another One’s talents, and he delivered, leading from start to finish and crossing the finish line half-length ahead of Lockdown (Paul Francis) and My Eclipse (Raddesh Roman). The final time for the race was a moderate 1:02.0 (24.1 x 47.4).
The victory showcased the horse’s speed and determination, and Nunes believes his protégé’s future lies in sprinting distances.
“He held on in the end, you know. But we know that Another One has breathing issues and so he is going to stay to sprinting,” Nunes told the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
Despite these challenges, Nunes plans to capitalise on Another One’s sprinting ability, aiming to get the most out of him in future races.
“We will hope for the best from there on. Another One won’t be able to go to the Classic races. He won’t stay the Classic distances and so we will keep him sprinting and try and get as much as we can from him,” Nunes said.
The decision to focus on sprinting distances is a strategic one, given Another One’s limitations. Nunes recognises that the horse won’t be suited for the Classic races, which demand endurance over longer distances. However, in the world of sprinting, Another One has already proven himself to be a formidable competitor.
