32 killed in 27 fatal crashes in April says ITA
Thirty-two people were killed in 27 fatal crashes in Jamaica during the month of April.
Fatalities decreased by nine per cent when compared to April 2024, while fatal crashes were down 13 per cent for the comparable period.
This is according to the Island Traffic Authority (ITA) in its latest monthly crash statistics released on Friday.
During the month, eleven pedestrians were killed, accounting for 34 per cent of the fatalities. This marks a 22 per cent increase in fatalities among this group of road users when compared to April 2024.
Eight motorcyclists were also killed in April this year, a 20 per cent reduction of deaths among this group of road users. Ten motorcyclists were killed during the comparable period in April 2024, the ITA said.
Seven elderly persons died during April 2025, a sharp 133 per cent increase when compared to April 2024.
The ITA is also reporting that vulnerable road users – pedestrians, pedalcyclists, motorcyclists and pillion passengers together accounted for 72 per cent of fatalities during April 2025. Overall, passengers accounted for 16 per cent of the road deaths during the month under review.
The parish of St Catherine recorded the most deaths during the month with six, followed by St Mary five, Clarendon four, Westmoreland three and St James three.
Trelawny, St Elizabeth, St Andrew and Kingston each recorded two fatalities during the month while St Ann, Portland and St Thomas, each had one fatality.
There were no road deaths reported in Manchester and Hanover last month, making them the safest parishes for road users.
