Lyssons Primary retains Eastern Champs crown
Lyssons Primary School of St Thomas won their fourth straight INSPORTS/Devon Biscuits Primary Schools Eastern Championships and walked away with $350,000 at the Stadium East Complex yesterday.
Lyssons rattled up 290.5 points after 40 finals and won by 131.5 points, ahead of Half-Way-Tree Primary in second on 159. St Richard’s Primary were third with 153 points.
Half-Way-Tree Primary collected $250,000 while St Richards got $200,000. The teams from fourth to 10th each collected $100,000 — Lawrence Tavern (142), St Patrick’s (123), Rousseau (106), Windward Road (75), Harbour View (70.5), John Mills (50.5) and Yallahs (42).
Lysson’s now joins Central champions Spanish Town Primary and Western winners Corinaldi Avenue as the regional champions and head into the grand finals dubbed the Nationals on 20-31 at the National Stadium where the all-island champion will be crowned.
Naggo Head are all-island champions, but they were soundly beaten by Spanish Town in the Central Championship. The National champion will walk away with $600,000.
Trenice McCalla of Half-Way-Tree Primary was the Overall MVP amassing 24 points, and she walked away with $15,000. She won four events — the Class One 100m, 200m, 4×100 and 4×200 relays.
Her teammate Arianna Lewis was second with 21.5 points, winning the Class Two 100, 200 double and a part of the 4×200 Open relay.
Davere Walker of Lyssons was the Champion Boy with 21 points, winning the 70 hurdles and the long jump open and was fourth in the 4×200 open and 4×100 relays.
Walker set two records by leaping 5.16m, bettering the 5.15m, held by Kahill Myles of Louise Bennett Primary since 2023.
Walker stopped the clock at 11.30 and broke the 70 hurdles mark of 11.52m set by Daquan Dawkins of John Mills in 2023.
Natasha Lumbley of John Mills leapt 4.60m and smashed the girls’ long jump open mark of 4.55 held by Kayla Lewis also of John Mills.
Chadwyk Senior of St Patrick’s established two records, clocking 13.40 in the Class Three 100m and 20.28 in the 150m.
As the records continued to tumble, Shamara Samuels of Lawrence Tavern ran 1:00.88 to win the Class One 400m in record fashion.
