WATCH: Several businesses on Haining Road without electricity after truck tears down wires
KINGSTON, Jamaica- Businesses along Haining Road in St Andrew are now without power and internet after several electricity poles and wires were torn down by a Premix cement truck Monday morning.
Reports are that about 11:30 am, the Premix cement truck got entangled in cable lines along the road, in the vicinity of Downsound Entertainment, causing significant damage to electricity poles.
Preliminary reports are that three poles were broken and several lines were pulled down, which caused damage to the connection infrastructure on a number of private premises along the street.
Dealo Gordon, an employee of Downsound Entertainment, said his initial thought during the incident was that the island had been rocked by an earthquake.
“I was in the office sometime around 11:15, 11:20am, I thought it was an earthquake at first, or someone dropped on the roof,” Gordon told Observer Online.
Recounting what happened, he added: “I came outside, and realised that a Premix concrete truck came out of one of the construction sites and pulled down the first pole, dragged the rest, [and] uprooted this metal pole behind me.”
Gordon said it took at least 45 minutes for members of the Jamaica Fire Brigade to arrive on the scene.
A section of the roadway has reportedly been impeded by the incident while over 300 customers are without power supply, according to Winsome Callum, director of corporate communication at Jamaica Public Service Company Limited.
“JPS teams are on location carrying out repairs, and have been able to restore supply to some customers. However, the replacement of the poles and repair of the damaged lines will take several hours. Full restoration of power to all affected customers is expected to be completed by 8:00 pm,” she said.
