Cedricka Williams closes NJCAA in style with big discus record
FORMER Holmwood Technical and Jamaica junior representative Cedricka Williams of Barton Community College closed her National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA) career in style on Saturday when she broke her own discus throw record with a massive 61.07m to retain her title at the NJCAA Outdoor Championships held at Gowans stadium, Hutchinson, Kansas.
Williams, who is the seventh Jamaican woman to go over 61.00m in the discus throw, was breaking the NJCAA discus record for at least the third time this season as she surpassed the previous 59.89m she had set on April 26th at the University of Kansas.
The athlete, who was also third in the women’s hammer throw, was one of several Jamaican winners at the three-day championships as there were double wins for Shamar Reid of South Plains College and Richard Hall of Central Arizona.
NJCAA indoor record holder and outdoor leader Bovel McPherson of New Mexico Junior College failed to make it to the final in the men’s 400m after he placed 10th in the preliminaries.
Williams also set the NJCAA Championship record in the process, beating the 57.80m mark she set last year as well as the stadium record 56.51m set by Princess Kara of Central Arizona in 2022.
She broke the previous records on her opening effort when she threw 60.23m before going further in the third round.
Former Clarendon College athlete Athilia Pryce of New Mexico Junior College was fifth with 48.82m, Monifa Edwards of Iowa Western was sixth with 46.05m, and Carla Kay Brown of Coffeyville Community College was eighth with 44.80m.
Williams, who was 10th in the javelin, also threw a personal best 52.79m to place third in the women’s hammer throw on Thursday as Pryce was fourth with 51.91m.
Reid threw 17.39m to win the men’s shot put during which Yekini Bowen of Iowa Western was fourth with 16.60m.
Reid returned to win the men’s discus throw with 60.45m; Ricardo Hayles of Barton was third with 55.45m; and Bowen, who was fourth with 55.23m, also placed fifth in the men’s hammer throw with 54.77m.
Hall, a finalist in the 110m hurdles at last year’s World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Lima, Peru, won the sprint hurdles in 13.63 seconds (-0.9m/s) and also took the men’s 400m hurdles with 49.95 seconds.
Antonio Forbes of Western Texas was third with 50.18 seconds, his teammate Shevon Depass was fourth in 50.23 seconds, and Shadane Smith of Hinds CC was fifth in 50.37 seconds.

Celine Riddle of Barton CC won the women long jump with 5.97m (0.2m/s) while Kavel Ritchie of New Mexico JC was eighth with 5.54m.
Riddle was also second in the women’s triple jump with a wind-aided 12.38m (2.1m/s).
