Roshawn Clarke back in training
NATIONAL 400m hurdler Roshawn Clarke is now back in full training after an injury at Grand Slam Track in Miami earlier this month.
The 20-year-old World Under-20 record holder did finish his race after clipping a hurdle midway and pulling up with visible discomfort. Clarke appeared to tweak his hamstring during the stumble and had to be assisted off the track by medical personnel.
His coach, Okeile Stewart says the situation is under control and Clarke is back on track and feeling positive ahead of his upcoming meets.
“He felt a discomfort in his hamstring at the meet and pulled up, so he got treatment, he saw the doctors, and he has been given the go-ahead to continue training — and so far, he is looking good,” Stewart said. “He is preparing for upcoming meets, including potentially another appearance on the Grand Slam circuit, and of course, the national championships — which is our key focus.”
While Stewart says Clarke’s participation in upcoming events is not yet confirmed, he says training is going well and they are taking a measured approach.
“We are playing it by ear but, pretty much, training is going fine based on what we are looking for this season,” he said. “The main goal for all my athletes this year is to make the national team. Once you get to the national championships, that is a big step — and from there, we take it forward.”
With what he sees as a more experienced and mature Clarke returning to competition, Stewart says he is confident he will rise to the occasion.
“He is more mature, more seasoned, and more exposed now,” Stewart said. “We are expecting that with the different challenges that may come he will be in a better frame of mind to manoeuvre and make the best of any opportunity that presents itself.”
Clarke has a personal best of 47.34 seconds in the 400m hurdles and has a season’s best of 48.20. He made the final of the event at the Olympic Games in Paris last summer, where he stumbled over the final hurdle and did not finish the race.
