Octogenarian left homeless by fire in Mount Salem
ST JAMES, Jamaica — An 85-year-old man was left homeless after fire destroyed his house in Mount Salem, St James on Thursday morning.
The man, who lived alone on Kayton Lane, was said to have been rescued by residents who managed to break down a wall to gain entry to his home as the fire was spreading.
Reports are that he was not injured but lost everything during the blaze.
The fire department was called in, and two units from the Montego Bay station responded and managed to extinguish the blaze.
They report that they got the call at 9:03 am and their arrival saw the house constructed of board with zinc roofing, completely engulfed.
MP caretaker for the St James West Central Constituency, Dr Andre Haughton, visited the scene following which he told the Jamaica Observer that the gentleman was impacted by the incident.
“He was very traumatised, and upon seeing the devastation, it really pains my heart,” he said.
He promised that they would try to do something to assist the gentleman following the loss he incurred.
“We’re going to help him, we’re going to do our best to help him,” he said.
