Man dead, cop injured after confrontation in Ebony Vale
ST CATHERINE, Jamaica—A man was fatally shot during a confrontation with the police in the Ebony Vale community of Spanish Town, St Catherine, on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as Damion Martin, otherwise called Pretty or Pinky, a resident of the community.
A police corporal was also shot and injured during the incident.
Reports are that around 10:00 am, members of the St Catherine North Police Division conducted a targeted operation in the area, acting on credible intelligence that an individual suspected of illegal firearm possession was at the location.
During the attempt to apprehend Martin, an armed confrontation ensued, resulting in an exchange of gunfire.
When the shooting ended, Martin and the police corporal were found to have sustained gunshot wounds. They were taken to the hospital, where Martin was pronounced dead while the corporal was admitted with serious injuries.
A Glock pistol with the serial number erased, a magazine containing one 9mm cartridge, two 12-gauge cartridges, and a training grenade were reportedly found at the scene.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (Indecom) is investigating the incident.
