Popcaan to bring the heat to the ‘Streetz’

Festival expected to bring summer calendar to a blazing close

KNOWN for his palpable stage presence and unprecedented style, dancehall’s “Unruly Boss” has been commissioned by the Streetz Festival team to deliver an unforgettable performance come August 30, when the highly anticipated event returns to the National Stadium Car Park for its third-consecutive staging.

Expected to follow up on scorching performances from Masicka in 2023 and Chronic Law in 2024, the 2025 staging is set to ignite the passion of eager music lovers. Popcaan, one of dancehall’s brightest global stars, is eager to bring his A-game at the production, which will bring the summer events calendar to a scorching close.

Based on the reception the St Thomas native received at the media launch held at Oceano, Marketplace, on Wednesday, the show is already looking like a must-attend.

“Dancehall music is alive, and we created Streetz to represent Jamaican culture, and dancehall, and reggae music, and so the stronger Brand Jamaica gets, the more successful the events around it will be once we keep it safe and deliver quality entertainment,” said Chad Williams, one of the festival’s directors.

Williams shared that as an event geared towards delivering an authentic Jamaican musical experience, Streetz continues to book the crème de la crème of the entertainment industry.

“We’ve always gone after the top of the top — and that’s a testament to our production, marketing and the opportunity that Kingston has for a premiere streets festival. The artistes see that and respect that, and so it’s always a collaborative effort between us and them to make this show a success. Relationships go a long way, and ‘Unruly’ is on board this year and expected to deliver a special set. You don’t want to miss it.”

Speaking of his set, Popcaan gave the media some insight into how special his performance will be, highlighting that he desires to bring a choir with him to deliver a touching performance of his hit single, Firm and Strong.

“We can’t leave God outta nothing weh we a do and so Firm and Strong is a must,” he said outlining that he had to forego his performance of the hit track at his last staging of Unruly Fest in 2023. The concert ended prematurely after police pulled the plug on the event.

“Unruly Fest, as you all know, did end prematurely because of the police, and everybody already knows wah happen. Mi did have a whole choir weh me did pay fi perform wid me fi do Firm and Strong, and I don’t want to pay another choir to do Streetz Festival and I encounter with the same set of police because that will not be a lifestyle moment,” the entertainer said, encouraging promoters to ensure all is set to avoid any unpleasant encounters with law enforcement. “We affi make sure seh the police dem in line and nuh wah stop Firm and Strong da night deh. As long as we can make sure seh we get the approval fi di choir forward pan stage before the festival lock off, no problem.”

Nathan Nelms, brand manager of Dragon Stout Jamaica, the event’s title sponsor, says so far, all is set for a memorable Streetz 2025.

“Hats off to Chad and the team for creating a fiery representation of a true, authentic Jamaican event that represents the culture and dancehall and the streets,” he said. “Dragon Stout has always been representing the streets. The streets are what built this brand and we’re happy to be a part of this event. These events are what drive the economy from the ground up. We’re talking about an event where you can see the peanut man, the pan chicken man, the people who built this country from the ground up. Dragon sees you, sees your hustle, and our support says we respect that.”

Tickets for the Streetz Festival are now available for purchase at streetzfestival.com/tickets. Gates to the venue will open at 4:00 pm.
