Dubbi gets major buzz with ‘Side Chick’ in the UK
KINGSTON, Jamaica — UK-based, Jamaica-born dancehall artiste Dubbi is pleased with the enduring popularity of his ‘ Side Chick’ song which is a bona fide hit on the dancehall scene in the United Kingdom.
“When it plays in the dance, people sing it word for word. It is like an anthem on the Birmingham dancehall scene,” Dubbi said.
The single, delivered on a Fiesta rhythm, delves into themes of relationships, loyalty, and the complexities of modern love. He even samples Frisco Kid with the lines: ‘gal pon the side …the best/all when she ready fi kiss and caress’.
Dubbi released sparkling visuals with flashy cars, fur coats and booty bouncing babes which have racked up over 128,000 views since its release. The popularity of the song has seen him opening for top artistes like Skeng and Armanii in shows in Birmingham and London, England.
He performed on Saturday alongside Nation Boss and General B at a show at the Chambers nightclub in Walsall, Birmingham.
“The Nation Boss show was great. The selectors never played my personal riddims so I performed on the Pepperseed and the early 90s riddim, the fans dem loved it, and mi get a different level of respect from the audience, and the other artistes,” Dubbi shared.
Dubbi is booked to appear on a show alongside rising dancehall star Jamal at the King of Clubs on June 6th in Birmingham in the UK. He is also promoting ‘Tun Up’ on the New Beginning rhythm alongside Popcaan, Chronic Law, Jahvinci and Qrulen.
Dubbi’s roots trace back to Chisholm Avenue in Kingston 13, where he was immersed in the vibrant rhythms of Jamaica’s dancehall culture.
A former student of Norman Manley High School, Dubbi was affectionately called ‘Dooby’ by his friends – a nod to the Scooby-Doo cartoon. Inspired by the cultural icons around him, Dubbi’s passion for music was ignited when a friend encouraged him to pursue it seriously. A pivotal moment came when he auditioned for the legendary singer Ken Boothe, who gave him a nod of approval.
