Doreen Billings, founder of SunCity Radio, has died
Kingston, Jamaica – Doreen Billings, otherwise known as “Mama B”, the chief executive officer (CEO) and founder of SunCity Radio 104.9 FM, has died.
Billings died Sunday following a battle with stage four uterine cancer, SunCity Radio said in a media statement on Monday.
“She faced her illness with unwavering strength, grace, and dignity, surrounded by family and the love of those whose lives she touched,” the radio station said
“Doreen Billings was a pioneering force in Jamaican media and a cherished figure in the Portmore community,” it added, noting that her work through SunCity Radio 104.9 FM was instrumental in providing a platform for young voices, promoting local talent, and addressing social issues affecting the nation.
“Her dedication to the station and its mission earned her the affectionate title of ‘Mama B’, a testament to her nurturing spirit and commitment to the community, cultural advocacy, and unwavering support for youth development, the station said.
In addition to her work in media, Doreen Billings was remembered as a passionate advocate for children’s rights and social justice.
Accorsing to the media release, as CEO of the St Catherine-based organisation Mothers in Crisis, Billings tirelessly worked to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect, often speaking out against societal indifference to the suffering of the most vulnerable members of society.
“Her advocacy was a call to action for many, highlighting the need for greater accountability and compassion,” the release stated, adding that Billings’ contributions extended beyond her professional endeavours.
Billings was a wife, a mother of three boys and a grandmother.
