Kingston football coach charged in funeral scam
KINGSTON, Jamaica – A 53-year-old football coach has been charged after allegedly pretending to be a funeral director and collecting money to carry out an autopsy.
Police say Richard Bryan of Westmore Drive, Maverley, Kingston 20 was charged with fraudulent conversion in relation to the alleged five-month long scam.
Reports from the Central Police are that between January and May of this year, Bryan allegedly pretended to be a funeral director and collected J$500,000 from a woman to conduct an autopsy and make funeral arrangements for her son. Bryan initially informed the woman that the interment would take place on Friday, May 9, and later changed the date to Sunday, May 25.
After several unanswered calls to Bryan’s phone, the woman became suspicious and made a report to the police.
Bryan was subsequently apprehended. He was charged for the offence after reportedly admitting to using the money for his personal use during an interview.
He was taken before the court and was denied bail. He is scheduled to reappear in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Thursday, May 29.
