The Pryce is now right
OFFICIALS of Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) were early on the scene, as promised, on Monday to correct the spelling on the sign which declared Ashoka Road in Waterhouse, her home community, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce Drive.
The capital city managers were left embarrassed on Sunday as the sign was erected with the spelling “Fraser-Price” instead of the correct “Fraser-Pryce”.
Robert Hill, the CEO of the KSAMC who was overseeing the correction, told journalists that the error was only realised when the sign was unveiled Sunday afternoon.
“I immediately apologised to all gathered, particularly to the Honourable Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, in regards to the error in the spelling and committed that it would be done [corrected] in the shortest possible time.
“And here we are today — the sign contractors have come and changed all the signs,” said Hill.
Fraser-Pyrce, one of the greatest sprinters of all time, was made a member of the Order of Jamaica in 2022 for her outstanding contribution to athletics. The award, Jamaica’s fifth-highest national honour, affixes the title The Honourable before her name.
On Sunday Fraser-Pryce accepted the apology from the KSAMC graciously, and on Monday residents of Waterhouse told the Jamaica Observer that the error did nothing to diminish the joy of seeing the road named after one of their own.
