Reggae Boyz edge Trinidad with last-gasp penalty in Unity Cup
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica are through to the final of the Unity Cup in London after outscoring Caribbean neighbours Trinidad and Tobago 3-2 in the semi-final played at Brentford Community Stadium in west London on Tuesday.
Reggae Boyz gave up a 2-0 lead as Trinidad and Tobago rallied to tie up the scores at 2-2 before Richard King scored his first goal, Jamaica’s second penalty of the day, in time added as a tie-breaking shootout loomed.
Both spot kicks were earned by Ronaldo Cephas.
King along with Kasey Palmer and debutant Rumarn Burrell were first-time international scorers for Jamaica who will face the winner of Wednesday’s other semi-final between Ghana and Nigeria.
Palmer put the Reggae Boyz into the lead when he scored a cheeky “Panenka” penalty in the 25th minute after Cephas was tripped by defender Jamal Jack just inside the 18-yard box.
Burrell added a second goal for Jamaica with a spectacular overhead kick in the 53rd minute after Trinidad’s goalkeeper Marvin Phillip had parried a cross.
Trinidad hit back almost immediately when Isaiah Leacock beat goalkeeper Shaquan Davis in the 54th minute and the experienced Kevin Molino completed the comeback in the 69th minute when he latched on to a free kick that came back off Davis’ right post and powered it into the goal from close range.
With the game seemingly headed to penalties, Cephas was fouled once again inside the Trinidad and Tobago box after he was chopped down by goalkeeper Phillip.
King, who had scored in the shootout in Friday’s Jamaica Premier League final for Cavalier, stepped up and powered the kick past Phillip as Jamaica booked a spot in the final.
