Big goals
Bethel Town Kindergarten & Prep sets sights on expansion
BETHEL TOWN, Westmoreland — What began in 2019 as a humble vision with six students has blossomed into what residents say is one of the most promising educational institutions in the parish of Westmoreland. Bethel Town Kindergarten and Preparatory School, located in the heart of the community whose name it bears, now has 74 students and has its sights set on expanding in a big way.
“I want to see great things for this institution,” Principal Julette McHayle shared with the Jamaica Observer. “I want it to be about 300 students… we can host it.”
The school’s growth is a testament to its commitment to quality education, personalised learning, and the well-being of its students. Small class sizes, passionate educators, and a supportive environment have made it a preferred choice for parents and guardians in the area.
“My child is seven years old and she started this school two years ago, so she is currently in grade 1,” Sasha South told the
Observer. “I really enjoy sending her to this school because the teachers, they are amazing. They check up on the child. If the child is not at school, they are the first call to ask what’s happening. I really appreciate how they keep us informed. [They discuss] how she is eating, how she is learning.”
She also had high praise for the school’s principal.
“Mi haffi big her up. We get to see her often. She is very passionate about the school. She is very passionate about the kids. She takes pride in what she is doing. More parents can send out them pickney and enjoy what I’m enjoying,” said a gleeful South.
Meisha Morrant, who teaches grades one and two, was equally effusive about her place of work.
“This is the ideal place to send your child because it is conducive not only to learning but to your mental health as well,” she said. “The camaraderie is good, and the teachers are excellent, patient and hard-working.”
The nurturing atmosphere has proven effective. Ulin Taylor spoke passionately about the transformation she has seen in her grandson since enrolling him at the school.
“He had been to [two other schools]; nothing was going on for him,” she explained. “Then when I move back from Montego Bay to Bethel Town, I heard about this school. He is doing very well. Since January, I can’t complain. When he was at [the other school] he couldn’t read, and now he is reading for me. Any message come from the school or anywhere, is him read it for me, because I am sick with my eye. I would encourage anybody to send their children right here to Bethel Town Prep School. He can say [in] Spanish from January right down to December, and he can count in Spanish.”
Foreign language development is just one of the impressive skills being nurtured at the educational institution. Two-year-old students like the son of Ashley Trought are already learning to count to 10 in Spanish and spell their names.
“My son started pre-K in January. The school is amazing!” Trought said. “He is learning so much. Counting to 30, spelling his name, and learning Spanish. This school is the best, and I hope it continues to grow so more students can come and more people can hear about it.”
Even though the only extracurricular programme is the 4-H Club for now, Bethel Town Kindergarten and Preparatory is slowly gaining recognition beyond the classroom. Coordinated by Vice-Principal Barbara Gardiner-Blake, the club has brought home several trophies and accolades, showcasing the talent and discipline of its students.
“We have gained a lot of trophies, and we hope to bring on other clubs as we go along,” said Principal McHayle.
Plans are already in motion. The goal is to ensure that, as the school grows, students receive a well-rounded education that fosters both academic and personal growth.
