Lyssons Primary in front at INSPORTS/Devon Biscuits champs
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Many-time winners Lyssons Primary surged to a narrow lead on the penultimate day of the INSPORTS/Devon Biscuits Primary Schools National Championship ahead of Spanish Town at the National Stadium on Friday.
After 23 of the 40 finals, Lyssons of St Thomas raced to 106 points, just two ahead of Spanish Town on 104 points in what is expected to be a mammoth fight on the final day.
Defending champion Naggo Head, which was dethroned by Spanish Town as central champions, is sitting in the catbird’s seat in third spot on 86 points.
The top 10 is completed by Half-Way-Tree (HWT) Primary in fourth on 62, ahead of the Western champion Corinaldi Avenue in fifth on 48 points, Greater Portmore (40), St Richards (40), Lawrence Tavern (36), Ascot (34) and St Patrick’s Primary (31).
Two records were broken as Dontae Williams of Jericho Primary erased his 2024 Cricketball Open mark of 66.46m, taking it to 68.40 for gold.
Corinaldi’s Class Four boys lowered their 4×100 mark of 58.55 to 58.15 seconds.
Stacian Forrest of Holland Primary took the girls’ Cricketball Open with a throw of 48.76m ahead of Lyssons’ Couture Beason with 41.81.
Jayden Bailey of Spanish Town won the boys’ Class One 400m impressively in 56.75 ahead of Ashumour Morrison of Ascot in 57.46.
Shamara Samuels of Lawrence Tavern captured the girls’ Class One 400m in 1:00.16 ahead of Half-Way-Tree’s Amira Munsie in 1:01.31.
Ricardo Granville of Naggo Head took the boys’ Class two 300m in 42.95, while his teammate Gabrielle Marshall won the girls’ equivalent in 43.65.
Kellan Harris of Angels Primary crowned himself the fastest at the meet, winning the boys’ Class One 100m in 12.73 seconds. Jovan Bell of Pembroke Hall was second in 12.81, and Iris Gelly’s Kamau Barnes was third in 13.10.
Shantwae Green of St Richard’s captured the girls’ Class One 100m in 13.56, the same time as second-placed Demeisha Graham of Yallahs Primary. Shamara Samuels was third in 13.60 in a close race.
Kayrone Buckham of Spanish Town won the boys’ Class Two 100m in 13.43, and Arianna Lewis of HWT took the girls’ equivalent in 13.65.
Chadwyk Senior of St Patrick’s captured the boys’ Class Three in 14.00, while Kathlia Roberts of Lyssons took the girls’ section in 14.30.
The all-island championship concludes on Saturday with 17 finals.
