Rivaldo Marshall reinstated, books NCAA spot in 800m

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Former NCAA indoor champion Rivaldo Marshall of the University of Arkansas, who won an appeal against his disqualification in the first round of the men’s 800m at the NCAA West Regionals at Texas A&M University, was one of three Jamaican men who qualified for the NCAA National Championships on Thursday.

Marshall, who won the indoor title last year while he attended the University of Iowa, was disqualified in Wednesday’s first round for what meet officials said was an “obstruction” but had the disqualification overturned on appeal and qualified for the national championships to be held at Hayward Field, Eugene, Oregon next month after he finished fourth overall in the second round on Friday.

Fifteen more Jamaicans, 10 from the West Regional and another six from the East Regional, including thrower Trevor Gunzell of the University of Alabama, who added the discus to his shot put qualification, qualified for the national that will be held June 11-14.

At the West Regional on Friday, Marshall’s teammate Tyrice Taylor led the men’s 800m second round with 1:46.64, Marshall clocked 1:46.97, while Dugion Blackman of Iowa State was seventh overall with 1:47.13.

Kimar Farquharson of Texas A&M University was 13th overall in 1:47.46, missing qualification by one spot.

Olympian Ralford Mullings of the University of Oklahoma was second in the men’s discus throw with 67.21m and was joined in Oregon by Racquil Broderick of the University of Southern California (USC), who was seventh with 59.54m.

Tarique George of the University of Missouri was unlucky, despite throwing a personal best 57.97m, finishing 13th, while Brandon Lloyd of Arizona State was 16th with 57.56m.

Jerome Campbell of Northern Colorado booked his ticket after he was fourth in the 110m hurdles, running 13.23 seconds (1.7m/s), while Demario Prince of Baylor University also made progress after he was ninth in 13.39 seconds (1.1m/s).

Shaemar Uter of Texas Tech placed fifth in the 400m in 45.61 seconds and punched his ticket to the championships as well.

Travis Williams of USC was 14th overall in the men’s 100m, running a wind-aided 10.15 seconds (2.4m/s) but will compete in Oregon as he was third in his race and took an automatic qualifying spot edging Campbell of Northern Colorado who ran 10.12 (1.1m/s) but was in a faster race and failed to finish in an automatic qualifying spot.

Safin Wills of the University of Oregon booked his spot after he was 12th in the men’s triple jump with a wind-aided 15.88m (2.1m/s), but it was the end of the road for Big 12 Conference champion Jhavor Bennett of Kansas State, who was 19th with 15.76m (2.6m/s).

In the East Regional, which is being held in Jacksonville, Florida, Luke Brown of the University of Kentucky was third in the men’s triple jump with 16.07m (-0.2m/s).

Christopher Young of the University of Alabama, who was sixth overall in the men’s discus throw with 59.10m, qualified for his first NCAA Outdoor national, along with Gunzell, who was 10th with 57.71m.

Jehlani Gordon of the University of Georgia ran a season’s best 10.07 seconds (-0.2m/s) to book his place in the men’s 100m. His teammate Shemar Chambers was eighth in the men’s 800m with 45.39 seconds while Jahiem Stern of Louisiana State was 12th in the 110m hurdles in 13.56 seconds (0.9m/s).
