Lyssons win INSPORTS primary champs

Lyssons Primary regained their Institute of Sports (INSPORTS) Devon Biscuits National Primary Schools Athletics Championship in style at the National Stadium on Saturday, beating second place Naggo Head by 56 points.

This is the 43rd staging of the event and Lyssons of St Thomas was winning their third all-island title in the last four years having previously won in 2022 and 2023.

Lyssons romped to victory amassing 220 points and were well clear of dethroned champions Naggo Head of St Catherine which finished second with 166 points. Spanish Town was third with 149 points.

The top 10 is completed by Half-Way-Tree Primary (102), St Richard’s (81), Lawrence Tavern (71), Ascot (67), Corinaldi Avenue (65), Rousseau (52) and Windward Road (52).

Lyssons walked away with the $600,000 winning prize and, having won the regional Eastern Championship, their total winnings rocketed to $950,000.

Kellan Harris of Angels Primary, who will be heading to Kingston College, was the overall individual champion with 23 points. He won the Class One 100m and 200m and was second on the 4x100m and 4x200m relay teams.

Kathlia Roberts of Lyssons, Arianna Lewis of Half-Way-Tree and Gabrielle Marshall of Naggo Head were joint female champions with 21 points each.

Fabian Pantern of John Mills was the Male Field MVP with 11 points, finishing second in the long jump and fifth in the high jump.

Six records were broken over the three days of competition. Two were broken on Friday courtesy of Dontae Williams of Jericho Primary in the Cricketball Open with a mark of 68.40 and Corinaldi’s Class Four boys lowered their 4×100 mark to 58.15 seconds.

The promising Davere Walker of Lyssons smashed the boys’ long jump open record with a leap of 5.35m while Malaika Cherrington of Naggo Head did 4.93m in the girls section.

Jahmario Dawkins of Naggo Head lowered the boys’ 800m open, stopping the clock at 2:17.66. The previous mark was 2:20.33 by Jevaughn Tomblin of Bellefield Primary. Donelia Speed of Lyssons broke the girls’ 800m, clocking 2:27.28.

Earlier, Niesha Campbell of Ascot took the Girls’ Class One 200m in 26.56 ahead of Nasiya Oates of Howard Cooke in 26.92.

Kellan Harris of Angels completed the sprint double, capturing the Boys’ Class One 200m in 25.48 ahead of Ashumar Morrison of Ascot in 25.56. The 400m champion, Jayden Bailey of Spanish Town was third with 25.91.
