Legacy Isle shines in Harlequin Cup at Caymanas Park
LEGACY Isle, with champion jockey Raddesh Roman aboard, produced a smart performance to capture the Harlequin Cup for Open Allowance horses over the five-straight course at Caymanas Park on Saturday.
Trained by Rohan Crichton, Legacy Isle clocked a time of 57.2 seconds to win the five-furlong straight event by five and a half lengths. Champion Bubbler, with apprentice jockey Demar Williams, finished second while third went to Mahogany, ridden by Richie Shakes. Desert Of Malibu, who was highly favoured to win the event, was a late non-starter.
Roman, who won two races on the day, said he was very pleased with his horse’s performance.
“I was pretty confident coming into this race because I expected a 56 or 57 and I got a 57.2, so I am happy with that,” Roman said. “It was a pretty easy race because I just tried to get a clean break and let him put his legs underneath him, then I just asked him to run the last two furlongs — and he did just that.”
Roman’s other winner on the day was Chief Dissident in the first race. He added that he was very happy with his day’s outing.
“I can’t complain about these two winners because I am just going to continue to put in the hard work and hope for the best going forward,” he said.
Former champion jockey Dane Dawkins also recorded a double on Saturday’s nine-race card. His winners were Nuclear Jet in the sixth event and Wayne’scherrylinks in the seventh race.
