Arnett Gardens resident celebrates 9 years of giving back to children
KINGSTON, Jamaica — For the past nine years, Gwendolyn Nelson, a dedicated resident of the Arnett Gardens community, has been quietly making a big impact in the lives of local children during Child Month.
Each May— her birth month— Nelson hosts a special treat for children in her community, offering food, entertainment and motivation to uplift and inspire the younger generation.
Her commitment doesn’t stop there. Every year, she also sponsors lunch for a student at Jones Town Primary School throughout the month of May, ensuring at least one child is well-nourished and supported.
Last year marked a turning point for Nelson’s initiative, as she began seeking outside sponsorship to expand her reach. With overwhelming support, contributions came from companies such as Carimed, Chase E Ramson, Jamaica Biscuit Company, LASCO, Seprod, and Wisynco. Her local councillor, Sarah Marshall, has consistently sponsored the children’s rides.
In addition to the fun, the event included motivational talks and mentorship sessions. Speakers have included guidance counsellors from Jones Town Primary and Iris Gelley Primary, along with respected community members.
“I’m truly grateful for the support from my family, friends, and especially my daughter, Sereta Hall, who has sacrificed her time and stood by me through this journey,” Nelson shared.
With the 10th anniversary on the horizon, Nelson is already looking ahead to an even bigger celebration in 2026. Her selfless dedication is a shining example of community spirit and the power of giving back.
