Corinaldi Avenue target third consecutive U-13 title
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Corinaldi Avenue Primary will be going after an unprecedented three straight titles when they take on another former champion, Chetwood Primary, in the final of the St James Football Association/Victoria Mutual Foundation Under 13 competition at WesPow Park, set to start at 11:30 am.
Corinaldi Avenue, which has won back-to-back titles on two occasions, including the 1993 and 1994 seasons, is one of four schools that have won consecutive titles.
Chetwood Primary, who will be seeking their third title on Tuesday, won in 2003 and 2004; Howard Cooke Primary won in 2009 and 2010, and Granville Primary won in 2018 and 2019.
Corinaldi Avenue Primary, who are unbeaten over the last three years and are yet to concede a goal so far this year, will go into the game as favourites but face a Chetwood Primary that has dug deep in their last two games to get to the final.
In the quarter-finals, Chetwood Primary outscored a determined Fairfield International Academy 3-2 in extra time before edging Howard Cooke Primary 4-3 on penalties after they had played out a 0-0 stalemate over 70 minutes of regulation and extra time.
Corinaldi Avenue, in the meantime, has cruised and is on a 24-game unbeaten run over the last three seasons and beat Catherine Hall 3-0 in the quarter-finals and Barracks Road Primary 1-0 in the semi-finals.
Deshane Gordon and Riomario Powell lead the Corinaldi Avenue scoring with seven goals each so far, one behind Albion Primary’s Aiden Thorpe and Barracks Road Primary’s Shamary Blake.
Kevin Porter has scored five goals for Chetwood Primary, followed by Tyquan Davis with four and Usher McDonald with three.
Barracks Road Primary and Howard Cooke Primary will meet in the consolation third-place play-offs, set to start at 10:00 am.
