Cavalier, Mount Pleasant and potentially Arnett could make history in 2025 Caribbean Cup
For the first time in the Concacaf Caribbean Cup’s history, there’s a possibility that three Jamaican teams can advance to the knockout stages of the tournament following Tuesday’s group stage draw for the 2025 edition.
Defending champions Cavalier FC will begin their title defence in August as they’ve been drawn in Group B. The two-time reigning Jamaica Premier League champions will take on Dominican Republic’s Cibao FC who they beat in last year’s final, Defence Force FC from Trinidad and Tobago and Haiti’s Juventus de Cayes.
JPL finalists Mount Pleasant Football Academy, in their second appearance of the tournament, will not renew their rivalry with Cavalier just yet as they’ve been drawn in Group A where they will meet 2023 champions Robinhood from Guyana, Trinidad’s Central FC and O&M FC from the Dominican Republic.
However, Arnett Gardens could join either Cavalier or Mount Pleasant in their group as the winner of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Shield, which Arnett won last year, will be placed in Group A with the runners-up playing in Group B.
With the top two from each group in the tournament advancing to the semi-finals, it means that Jamaica could have three representatives which would be the first for any Caribbean country. It could also mean that Cavalier, Mount Pleasant and Arnett Gardens will have the opportunity to play in the next year’s Concacaf Champions Cup simultaneously.
The winner of this year’s Caribbean Cup will automatically qualify for the Champions Cup round of 16 while the second and third place teams qualify for the round of 32.
Cavalier have qualified for the last two Caribbean Cup finals which saw them participate in consecutive Champions Cup tournaments, including the historic match-up with Argentine legend Lionel Messi and Inter Miami last March.
