Hail the statesman
Dear Editor,
This is written in response to the Jamaica Observer article of May 27, 2025, entitled ‘Dr Peter Phillips — transitioning from politician to statesman’.
While no one is perfect, and some think this especially relates to the political fraternity, Dr Phillips stands out, similar to what you have posted, as someone who would fit well into the label of statesman.
Although there is no competition, in my opinion Dr Phillips is the most outstanding Jamaican political statesman since the days of Norman Manley and Alexander Bustamante.
It cannot be overlooked that it was his efforts that first made a massive dent in Jamaica’s national debt, still an ongoing concern.
But, apart from anything else, he is the only politician, and I stand to be challenged, who has attempted to deal with the crime situation by starting to address people seen as being generators of violence associated with his own party. This is something that should be blatant and visible from all politicians in Jamaica. It is Jamaica’s great loss that he did not become prime minister.
However, as the Observer article states, there are many more ways that Dr Phillips can continue to contribute meaningfully and effectively to Jamaica. And, additionally, it would be in the interest of any leader in the political network, regardless of political affiliation, prime minister or otherwise, to attempt to obtain his services as an advisor or more.
This letter is written in black and white and there is no green or orange print. This is not about any party. It is simply about an individual and his service. And it contains the best of wishes and regards to Dr Peter Phillips for his future and for his contributions to Jamaica that he, no doubt, will continue to make.
