Guy confident PNP will sweep St Mary
ISLINGTON, St Mary — St Mary Central Member of Parliament (MP) Dr Morais Guy is predicting a clean sweep of the parish by the People’s National Party (PNP) when the looming general election is called.
“From the border at White River to Prospect, to the Caribbean Sea to the border with north-east St Catherine, it will be orange,” he assured PNP President Mark Golding during Thursday evening’s campaign launch for the man who will replace him on the PNP ticket, Omar Newell.
Dr Guy, who has opted not to seek re-election, reaffirmed his support for Newell who, he said, will bring home St Mary Central for the PNP.
“We are ready. And that is why I say to all of those who want to come and test Central St Mary, ‘Don’t test because you’re going to backslide like others before,’” the sitting MP and medical doctor said, referencing candidates who ran against him in the past.
Dr Guy chided the Government for what he sees as its failure to campaign on achievements, instead relying on promises of what it can do if re-elected.
“This Government is campaigning on what they are going to do,” he said.
However, this is in stark contrast to repeated utterances from the Government on what it has accomplished while in office. The elections are constitutionally due by September this year.
Speaking to orange-clad Comrades Thursday, Dr Guy — who has held the St Mary Central seat since 2002 — reminded supporters that the election will be crucial.
“This election is going to be a serious one. This election is going to determine the destiny of your children and their future,” he said.
“I say to you, Comrades of Central St Mary, I say to those who are sitting on the fence and to you Labourites who want to come and vote for the better party, place your vote squarely beside the head for the People’s National Party,” the outgoing MP urged.
