Atlantic Starr co-founder and vocalist Wayne Lewis dead at 68
Wayne Lewis, who, along with his brothers David and Jonathan, founded the American R&B band Atlantic Starr, has died at the age of 68.
Lewis, who sang lead on the group’s #1 Billboard Hot 100 hit Always and the tearjerker Secret Lovers with former member Barbara Weathers and the 1992 hit Masterpiece, passed away on June 5.
The cause of death has not yet been revealed.
In a post on its official Facebook page, the group’s management confirmed his passing.
“It’s with great sadness we have to post the passing of Wayne Lewis on June 5, 2025. Please keep the family in your prayers and respect their privacy,” the post read.
Atlantic Starr has built up a strong following locally and is known for multiple hit songs such as One Lover at a Time, My First Love, Secret Lovers, Always, Masterpiece, and I Remember You.
The group performed in Jamaica on May 11 at Bonafide Fest held at Catherine Hall in Montego Bay alongside The Jets and others.
The group was reduced to a quintet in the mid 198os and has to date released more than 12 full-length albums.
Their last studio release was 2017’s Netamorphosis.
Their first major hit came with 1981’s When Love Calls, which rose to #4 on the Billboard Hot 100.
However, their biggest seller to date is 1987’s All in the Name of Love, having earned a platinum certification in the United States. This album contained the hits One Lover at a Time and Always.
