SOMERSET, England (CMC) — West Indies Women ended their dismal tour of the UK with another heavy defeat, this time a nine-wicket loss to England Women via the Duckworth/Lewis/Stern method in the third and final Women’s One Day International here on Saturday.
The result brought an end to a disappointing three-week tour where they were swept 3-0 by England Women in both the T20I and One-Day International series.
The rain played a major role in the contest at the Cooper Associates County Ground, which saw the match being reduced to 21-overs per side.
West Indies Women were struggling at 43 for three in the 13th over when the heavens opened up and when play restarted after a five-hour delay, they got up to 106 for eight from their 21 overs.
England’s Captain Nat Sciver-Brunt then hit an unbeaten half century at the top of the order as the home side rushed to 109 for one off only 10.5 overs to wrap up the contest.
Sciver-Brunt bludgeoned 57 from 33 balls with nine boundaries, while Sophia Dunkley made 26 and Alice Capsey ended on 20 not out off 11 balls.
The result was never in doubt after Dunkley and Sciver-Brunt blasted 40 runs from the first five overs.
Spinner Karishma Ramharack trapped the former lbw to break the partnership, but Capsey along with her skipper added an unbeaten 69 runs in just under six overs to ensure there would be no further losses.
Brunt-Sciver brought up her 50 off 31 balls by hitting Ashmini Munisar for four through cover, and she ended the match with the next delivery by pulling her through wide long on for another boundary.
Earlier, West Indies Women, playing without their inspirational Captain Hayley Matthews for the second-straight match, got off to a horrid start after they were sent in to bat.
They lost Realeanna Grimmond and Zaida James for ducks, while Stafanie Taylor made just one as West Indies slumped to four for three.
Qiana Joseph made 34 off 44 balls in her return from the flu, but the visitors owed their eventual total to Aaliyah Alleyne’s late cameo that got them into three figures.
With them struggling at 75 for six with two overs remaining, Alleyne clobbered Lauren Filer for five consecutive boundaries in the 20th over to breathe life back into the innings.
She was eventually dismissed in the last over for 27 from 18 balls, inclusive of six fours.
Sarah Glenn led England’s bowling attack with 3-21, while Em Arlott took 2-15.
