Woman who lost leg during election motorcade gets prosthetic
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Dalvarine Bruce, the woman who lost her leg on the campaign trail last year has received a prosthetic leg.
“Mrs Dalvarine’s life changed in an instant. One day she was walking, moving through life like any of us, and the next, everything was different. She lost her leg,” Prime Minister Andrew Holness shared via social media.
He continued, “that kind of loss is hard to imagine. It’s physical, yes, but it’s also emotional. It tests your spirit, your identity, your independence.”
Bruce lost her leg in February, 2024 while taking part in a Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) campaign motorcade on nomination day for the then-local government elections.
Bruce’s accident and the death of 15-year-old Lamar Grey, who fell from a People’s National Party (PNP) motorcade in the same local government election season, resulted in calls for more stringent controls on the campaign trail.
Her new prosthetic limb was provided under the Government’s “New Limb, New Life” programme, Holness shared.
In photos shared by Holness, Bruce appeared in a pink dress showing off the slim silver prosthetic as she supported herself through physical therapy exercises.
“Today I stood beside her as she was fitted with a new prosthetic leg by the dedicated team at Surgix Prosthetics Clinic. The New Limb, New Life programme is about restoring freedom, restoring confidence, and making sure people who have suffered great loss aren’t left behind,” the prime minister said.
