Atlantic Starr’s Wayne Lewis passes on
Wayne Lewis, who co-founded Atlantic Starr, died in the United States on June 5 at age 68.
The singer’s last performance was at Bonafide Fest, which took place on Mother’s Day at Catherine Hall in Montego Bay, St James.
The rhythm and blues group, known for hit songs such as When Love Calls, Secret Lovers, and Always, confirmed the keyboardist/singer’s death on its official Facebook page.
“It’s with great sadness we have to post the passing of Wayne Lewis on June 5, 2025. Please keep the family in your prayers and respect their privacy,” the post read.
Bonafide Fest was promoted by the Las Vegas-based Bonafide Band, whose roots stretch from Montego Bay. The event also featured The Jets, Christopher Martin, Kevin Downswell, Tessanne Chin, Mackie Conscious, and Jah Saint.
Donovan Stephens of the Bonafide Band told the Jamaica Observer that they contacted Atlantic Starr through The Jets, whose hits include Crush On You and You Got It All.
He described Lewis as, “A good guy who was easy to work with.”
Formed in 1976 by Lewis, his brothers David and Jonathan, Atlantic Starr performed several times in Jamaica. Their most high-profile shows were at Port Royal in 2006 and the Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival in Montego Bay two years later.
The Bonafide Fest marked the Bonafide Band’s first venture as show promoters.
Stephens and his colleagues were pleased with the response.
“We could have done with a little more promotion, but we’re glad the way things turned out,” he said.
