Miller takes on task of lifting Calabar’s football
Most people might know him as the son of clergyman Al Miller but Jeremy Miller has been making a name for himself in the football circles as a young, vibrant, emerging football coach.
Miller has been appointed as the head coach of Calabar High School and has been tasked with the responsibility of bringing glory to Red Hills Road.
“It’s really a privilege to be entrusted with the reins at such a storied institution. There’s a lot of hope and expectations placed on one’s shoulders once you step into such a role,” Miller told the Jamaica Observer in an interview.
“I know the last 20 years have not been or brought the results that everyone would have liked to see at the Manning Cup level. But that history only fuels the ambition to restore pride and belief,” he noted.
Calabar High, which was formed in 1912, have tasted success in the Manning Cup on only three occasions, winning in 1943, 1977 and 2005 — but have not been a major force in football over the last two decades.
However, the last time Calabar won at any level in football, Miller was at the helm, coaching the Under-16s to championship honours in 2019.
“I think that experience has helped me to understand and even embrace the task at hand currently,” he noted.
He continued: “I am fully committed to building something sustainable, competitive and worthy of this institution’s legacy. So, basically, right now, the aim is just to nurture a culture where success can take root again. The process starts now, and I’m ready for the challenge”.
The Wolmer’s Boys’ past student comes with a wealth of experience, which started in 2003 in the Chicago area and a stint at Chicago Fire Youth Academy. Miller then became an assistant coach at the college he attended — Judson University.
Upon returning to Jamaica, Miller had a coaching stint as an assistant at Wolmer’s Boys’ (2016-2018) and coached Cavalier U15 and U17 to KSAFA youth titles in 2017.
His success also saw him being assigned to the senior Cavalier team as assistant coach to Rudolph Spied when they regained promotion into the Premier League and for their first year back in the Premier League.
Miller wanted more challenge and an opportunity popped midway through the season and he grabbed it to be head coach at Constant Spring FC.
He then moved on to Barbican FC, where he won the KSAFA Super League and came within one game of returning to the Premier League, losing out to Mount Pleasant FA.
Since then, he has been at Calabar, while still holding roles as the head coach of McKay New Raiders FC (2022-present), director of coaching at Valeo Futbol Academy (2023-present) and most recently, as the coach of the recently revived club Meadhaven United FC.
