Community rallies to support families left homeless by Barbican Road fire
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Several individuals and organisations have come together to offer hope, support, and real solutions after a devastating fire destroyed a home at 17 Barbican Road in St Andrew last month, leaving 13 people — including six children — homeless.
A restaurant located on the property was also destroyed.
From immediate relief efforts to long-term rebuilding initiatives, the community response has been swift and deeply compassionate.
Issa Construction, a long-standing business rooted in the neighbourhood, was among the first to step up. The company assisted with clean-up efforts and pledged building materials to aid in reconstruction. Their response went beyond corporate responsibility, reflecting a genuine commitment to the people they serve daily.
“Andrew and Peter Issa, known for their quiet but consistent community support, have once again shown what it means to care. While their generosity is nothing new, their hands-on involvement in this moment of crisis has touched the hearts of all. This support, at a time when families are starting from nothing, means more than words can express,” said community leader Zukie Jarrett, who has been at the forefront of support for the affected families.
“Issa Construction isn’t just a business in the neighborhood — they’re part of the fabric of this community. Andrew and Peter Issa are always quietly giving back in so many ways, but this time, their support has touched a different level. Helping families who’ve lost everything means the world to all of us. It shows what true community looks like,” he added.
St Andrew Eastern member of parliament (MP) Fayval Williams, in collaboration with St Andrew North Eastern MP Delroy Chuck, has taken steps through the Government’s Social Housing Programme to assist families with long-term housing solutions.
“Their efforts bring not only immediate relief but also a pathway to stability and dignity for those who lost everything,” Jarrett commented.
He also lauded the role of Food For The Poor Jamaica, which responded swiftly with critical aid.
“We also recognise Food For The Poor Jamaica for their rapid response and unwavering commitment. Their provision of emergency supplies and building materials continue to be a vital part of the recovery process,” he said.
“This coordinated response highlights the power of unity and the strength of a community that stands together in times of crisis.”
